Hello and Happy New Year!

I've read most of the questions here and features but I'm still unsure. Frankly, I don't understand some of the features, sorry :( It would be really nice to have a trial version since everybody's needs are so unique.

Anyway, what I want to do is this: set up a site for amateur musicians (http://my-music-and.me/) for non commercial purposes, simply to post, download, share and discuss amateur music.

1) I want to strictly forbid commercial sales, remove any commercial features, all songs must be free and freely downloadable (full versions, not just samples) by members only.

2) I want members to be able to comment and rate others music.

3) I want to be able to show "most popular" tracks and artists, based on the above ratings, on the front page.

4) I want to be able to show "most recent" uploads and comments as well on the front page.

5) Skipped, found an answer :)

6) Is there sort of "follow" or "like" (other than rating) feature such as on Twitter or Facebook so one can tell what artists given user follows/likes?

7) Is it possible to have music classified by genre first on the first page and then by artists?

8) Is there a feature that puts a random song on the front page as well, next to the most popular ones?

9) Is there area for general news, editorials, admin updates and information?

10) Can send email bulletins to users?

11) Is there an option to notify users via email when their favorite artists upload new tracks or update their profile?

12) When MC is installed within Joomla, can it be used as the main page of Joomla site with all the normal Joomla elements hidden?

Thanks a lot and sorry about all the questions, if some are naive, but it's hard to choose :( I've been looking for weeks for a solution for this. I was about to settle on a plain forum when I found this. I'm familiar with Joomla, so this would be perfect.

    hello

    1) there are no selling features on Music Collection. all songs are downloadable free. nothing to limit, then.
    2) no prob, included
    3) no prob, included
    4) no prob, included. there are several modules served along with the component that allow you to list all this kind of stuff (and a lot more), and the frontpage is fully customizable to include any modules you want, so the possibilites are infinite.
    6) mmm... no. this should be programmed custom.
    7) no... it's not. there's no "genre view".
    8) no.. but again, this can be programmed custom..
    9) mmm.. no.. that is not Music Collection's... it looks more like just a Joomla area... right?
    10) again, not a Music Collection feature. you are talking about external joomla feature you want. Music Collection is a Music Directory Component.
    11) no, this is related to #6. so, if #6 is programed, this point can be programmed as well.
    12) everything installed in joomla can be used this way. Music Collection is no exception.

    best,

Wow! Thanks for quick answers :woohoo: So far so good, not all the above features are 100% essential and yeah, duh... I can send emails via Joomla

One more idea came to me later: is it possible to allow non-registered guests to listen to songs and rate them, but not to download anything and not to write comments. Downloading of music and commenting should be available to registered users only? Is that possible?

Speaking of genres, is there any feature then that allows to search music by genre only?

    Thanks a lot again!

yes, it's possible. on the component's global configuration you define who can download and listen (independantly). options are: everybody, nobody, only registered.

and also, rating and commenting is only available for registered users.

and about genres: yes. the search feature (you can test it here in our demo!) can filter by genre. actually, you can define, in the configuration, what filteres to show.

so, you can, for instance, enable only the Genre filtering options, and disable all the rest. this way, you'll have a Search by Genre facility!

cool, huh? ;) Music Collection is highly configurable!

Yup, cool indeed. Yeah, I messed around a bit with the demo too. I think I'm sold on this software. MC pretty much seems to fulfill most my needs and there is nothing else that comes closer. The price is reasonable, not a fortune, so even if I don't get all the features exactly as I want I'm sure I can build a nice community around it.

I am wanting to start a site similar to what the above user has described, I have purchased this product but when I am in the admin area I cannot see a way to upload music of my own from my hard disc or another mean. I am in the music collection manager, it defaults to the "albums" manger, but when I click "new" nothing happens, and I am not able to select any other tab such as artists, songs, etc. Maby I installed incorrectly or am missing something big?

I have uninstalled and re-installed following instructions precisely and still same issues. In Album Manger unable to create new album, cannot select artist/Formats/Genres/Tags/comments/Ratings. When I select these tabs I remain in the albums tab. Any ideas?

After you installed it, did you log into the administrator, go into the MC options that are located in the top right corner in the Album Manager page and save them?

I see the same thing. It looks like you have a corrupt or crashed album table in your sql database. It spits out this info along with a bunch of other issues when you turn on debug reporting in joomla.

I changed the password of just the temp account. I would suggest you log in with your main account and change the password of the temp account to something new and email it directly to germi. Posting a user account with password of a super admin on a publicly viewable forum is highly discouraged. It would allow someone to take full control of your website and use it for notorious intentions and even lock you out.

Hopefully this will at least have prevented someone from hijacking your site B)
