I thought I saw this somewhere a couple days ago on your site, and am probably just blind or the coffee hasn't kicked in yet, but can you use this on sites with ads and so forth with the version of the jw player included? or do you need to buy the commercial version from the longtail folks to do this?

I'm using Google AdSense and jw player on every page, so if what you say is true, I would have a big problem :(

The licensing with MC would allow it to be used on just 1 site per license, regardless of ads or not.

However, using the jw player which can be downloaded as an optional plugin/module, is the free version and can not be. Even to use it on a CMS, which joomla is, would require a licensed version of the jw player, let alone the addition of advertisements.

    Taken from their website: https://www.longtailvideo.com/order/license/

If you don’t buy a commercial license, you cannot use a JW Player™ on (i) a site that has ads; (ii) a corporate site; or a (iii) CMS. Our licenses are very inexpensive, so what are you waiting for?

Though the CMS clause seems to not be included on all the licensing information pages they have. I found it only on select pages. On their FAQ page they list: http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/faq

Do I need to purchase a license?

If you plan to use the player non-commercially, then you don't need to buy a license. The player is open source and free for non-commercial use.

If you are planning to use the player for corporate use, or to generate revenue from your site (through ads or e-commerce, for instance), then you are required to buy a license.

We offer the commercial player to non-profits, educational institutions and government organizations at no charge. If you are a representative from one of these places and are interested in using the JW Player Pro, please contact us.

If you're not certain whether you require a license, contact us and we'll let you know. As a general rule: if you need to ask, then you probably need to buy a license.

So one may be able to argue that CMS point. Where as the commercial clause is documented through out all their licensing pages and is clearly against their licensing and usage agreements. If one uses any type of ads or receives a revenue from their website, then they would need to purchase a jw flash player license as not to violate the terms of usage. Even the jw player used on this site could be argued against the licensing as it is the free one and is used on a for profit site (unless he has a paid license and just never updated the player to reflect it).

I ran into these same problems on an open source project I like to use.

Thank you for all the info. It seems we have to buy a jw player license for €59,- or wait till MC supports Html 5, which could take a while...

Thanks for quoting the text from longtail that brought up my initial question.

Do you know if MC has pre-purchased a commerical license (since they are after all including jwplayer in this paid/commercial software, I didn't download it separately) and/or if so, what are the terms of the license? Eg, ok on joomla, not ok with ads, or do whatever, it's paid for?

If it's not included, it turns into 79 for the pro version of MC and another 59 for the player? Or is it somehow included all together? Afterall, since you can by 50 jw licenses for 149, it is my hope that MC has a deal in place where it has done something similar and it's just included in their price.

I just don't want to assume and then down the road get hit with another cost or worse.

    hello

I think you are talking about different things.

    1) the jwplayer included on MC is free, and its the jwplayer you can donwload for free on longtail. I mean, if you wanted, you could download it from their site, instead of ours. in other words, the money of Music Collection (39 to 79 eur, depending on the version) are only in concept of MC, NOT JWPLAYER, at all.

this point is important: the jwplayer is not used as PART OF A CMS (that would be: you are the joomla team, and you include jwplayer on the joomla distribution).. its simply used on a site that is build using a CMS, but the player is not part of the CMS itself.

the jwplayer included in MC is the free liscense one. we are not responsible of the use you make of it. if you require a commercial liscense for using on an ad-site or corporate site, then I guess you should go to longtail and buy one if you dont want to infringe their liscense. :)
