HOW TO SETUP A VPN CONNECTION ON UBUNTU!
In this article we show you how to setup a VPN connection on Ubuntu using PPTP, OpenVPN or L2TP protocols using Network Manager.
Setting up a VPN connection on Ubuntu is quick and easy!
Once you have selected your preferred VPN protocol (PPTP, OpenVPN or L2TP), please follow the configuration instructions as set out below.
How to setup a VPN connection on Ubuntu using PPTP
1. First, you will need to configure your VPN as shown in the screenshot below.
2. Next, add a new connection.
3. Enter your credentials and the server’s IP address.
Enter any of the server IPs by logging into the VPN Control Panel and clicking on “Software & Help.” Then click on “View” next to “Manually set-up VPN – No software.” Copy and paste the server IP address that you wish to connect to.
4. If you wish, you can customize the DNS (Domain Name System). In this example, we’re using the Google Public DNS.
5. Uncheck all except MPPE.
Please note: Do not tick “Available to all users.”

How to setup a VPN connection on Ubuntu using OpenVPN
– How to install OpenVPN plugin for Network Manager
1. Find the Terminal option on the left sidebar
2. Type: sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome and press Enter
3. Type in your password and press Enter
4. Type: “Y” and press Enter
5. Close Terminal

How to configure VPN
Once you have installed the OpenVPN plugin for Network Manager, you will need to download the https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/free-vpn-for-chrome-vpn-p/majdfhpaihoncoakbjgbdhglocklcgno files. You will also need to download the linux.zip
Navigate to “Home” and create a new folder, for example, “HMA VPN.” The files you previously downloaded will be in your “Downloads” folder. You will need to extract both zip files into your new folder.
Next go to Network Manager, which you will see in the top right corner of your desktop. Click on “VPN Connections” and then “Configure VPN.”
When you’re asked to choose a Connection Type, scroll down, and click “Import a saved VPN configuration” and then click “Create.”
Locate the new folder you created earlier. Click on TCP and choose a server that you wish to connect to, for example, Canada.Ontario.Toronto_LOC1S3.ovpn.
– Change your Authentication type to “Password with Certificates (TLS)”
– Enter your HMA! username and password
You will now need to insert the appropriate certificates into the fields by clicking on the orange folder on the right side of each field. You should have previously downloaded and extracted them from the archives.
Once you have installed them, you can proceed to add them into the appropriate fields:
– In the “User Certificate” field, insert hmauser.certonly.txt
– In the “CA Certificate” field, insert ca.crt.txt
– And finally in the “Private Key” field, insert hmauser.key.txt
– Click “Save”
Connect to VPN
Now navigate to Network Manager, which is located in the top right corner of your desktop.
Click on VPN Connections and then click on the VPN server you tuned previously. In this example, it’s Canada.Ontario.Toronto_LOC1S3.
You will see a notification that you have established a successful VPN connection.
Now you can check your new location!
Should you have any connection issues, type the following command into your terminal, and email the log to us: cat /var/log/syslog | grep VPN.
