Discogs API Key

0
When I go to the Album Manager it says I don't have defined a Discogs API Key yet and it gives me a link where I can get one.
When I follow that link I get a "Page not found" message from Discogs. A little reading on the Discogs website shows that this key is for the 1.0 version of the API which has been depricated. The api keys will be invalidated by December, 15 of this year and no new keys are given anymore. See http://www.discogs.com/help/forums/topic/308078 for more information.
That renders the Discogs feature rather useless. Or am I missing something here?

    Hi Germi,
I still haven't found a way to get this working. As this feature is apparently the only way to get inforation in the database in a reasonably effortless way, this is a killer question. Not getting this feature working means that the whole package is useless.
Frankly I don't get it. Why can't a music collection tool read mp3 tags? My whole collection is tagged in detail. It should be as simple as uploading an mp3 file and your tool should read all the appropriate tags and that's it.
Since I can't seem to get this thing working without your help, I can't tell for sure, but up till now I'm rather disappointed.
So it's up to you now.
    Best regards,
    Bart

    hello!

first of all, ID3 tag reading is coming in the next version of MC, due to release in a couple months probably.

the problem with Discogs is indeed that they cahnged the API key request so no key is needed apparently.
so it seems that API must be disabled to allow this working correclty.

could you give me FTP access so I can change this? I need to modify code on 2 files of MC. and when this is working, I'll just add it to the official pacakge.

sorry for the late answer! :S

ok, I've been looking into this (no need for you to send me FTP details, thanks) and it's quite different, the new API

so, for now, can you just use this KEY:

    186c0f2c8c

meanwhile I'll work on the new system, but it will take me a while since it's very, very different from the current one!

    Hi Germi,
    Thanks for answering.
Indeed the new API is changed completely. And what is worse: on December 15 they will pull the plug on the old API. So from that day on no searches can be performed anymore even if you have a key.
It's good to hear that tag reading is in the pipeline. Can't wait for that.
For now I'll use the key you gave me.

I do have another question. You can change the 'songs' folder, even make it refer to another server. But I don't understand what happens then. Does your code copy the mp3 from that server to the songs folder or does it just store where the song is to be found?
I'm asking because I have all my songs stored somewhere where each song can individually be reached, but folder traversing is not enabled (and I can't enable it), so basically I'm looking for some other way to handle that, eg giving the path of the songs using placeholders.
Moving the songs is not really an option, because I can't store that amount of data on the webserver.
    Any ideas?

good to know. still 1 month for Dec 15th, I'll have it ready by then for sure ;)

if you choose an external server, music collection just streams from there, files are not copied in your server, and files are NOT uploaded to the external server if you try to upload. so, this option is ONLY if you know the path for every file you want to externaly store, and you have to manually type that path into the songs path. do you know what I mean?

Manually type? I don't think so. I'm not gonna type some 10000 paths. I'll figure out some way to import all necessary data straight into the database. However first I will need to see this whole thing work with 1 CD. Which I haven't managed yet. However this is not about Discogs anymore, so I will start a new thread.
