An affiliate account was set up and we configured the referral word. However, when we use the affiliate link, Joomla returns 404 error.

All the affiliate plugins are enabled in the site, including Virtumart. Please note that I created the account for the affiliate, the affiliate didn't create the account themselves.

the affiliate word is used to point the user to an existing page in your site. It will not create the page, it will just point to it and identify it as a referal page.
for example, if the referral word is "test", make sure that there is a page www.yoursite.com/test in your Joomla installation
