It depends on what country you live in. You will want to check your local laws. In general the rule is you can not share, allow download, or stream any copyrighted material without the express written consent of the copyright holder. Most popular music is license in this way and does not allow one to legally share it.

However, there is a lot of free music out there that does allow one to share. Most of it is from smaller bands, or indie music. You can check out sites like jamendo.com and look at the individual licensing.

Also in most countries you can stream music for your own personal use if you own a legit copy of the music. Just not for others or public use.

Another popular alternative is to link to the videos from sites like youtube.com as they have a very strict copyright policy. Linking to their content will keep your site fairly updated. The downside is any video they discover that infringes on copyright and gets removed, will in return remove it from your site.

Thanks for your reply. So if i publish Music collection on my community site and allow user to share their mp3, this can be a problem for me, correct?

Yes, I would not recommend doing something like this, unless all your users are musicians and sharing only their own music that they own the copyright to.

    I don't understand your question...
also I do not agree it is useless in this way..!
Music Colleciton is used to share content.. but of course, content that you HAVE THE RIGHTS to share! it is not about the component (Music Collection), that is a general thing about music liscensing... you are not suposed to "distribute" content if you don't have the rights to do so! it's not a Music Collection limitation.. it's just basic "laws" about music sharing..! its the same with every other system you can find!

so again... I didnt' understand your question :) can you ask again?

Yes Germi i agree to you. The law limits a lot the feature of this great component. You are great! This is not a critical to your component, but to the laws system. I saw your demo and i wanted use in the same way on my site. Which kind of content could i share with your component?
    Thanks

well, you can share content that you have the rights to (music that you made, for instance), or music that is GPL or other liscense that means that you can freely distribute (a lot of indie music, for instance)

you can also have links to youtube, because YouTube has the rights and allow you to use their videos. do you know what I mean?

I'm going to say this next thing in a low-profile... :)

you are not supposed to share music you don't have the rights to... but you can do it... at your own risk! I mean.. you could have some problems if someone in the industry find this out... although it's not very likely if your site is not huge...

I will deny to have said the words above :)

Ok. But i choose your component to share mp3 music files considering that users can already share videos with jomsocial. So do you know some regular site that has mp3 list where users can link to your component? (like discogs but for mp3)

Also do your component has admin moderation control about songs upload?

Still thinking about purchasing this component and wanted to know..do you mean that admin cannot pre-approve user song uploads, delete user song uploads after or both?

    Thanks.

he can delete, of course, at any point. but there's no "pre approval" system out of the box.

This may be a little off topic but, I would like to use JMS to categorize music that I and local musicians I know are writing. I have looked but cannot see a way to upload songs from my hard disc. Is this possible?

mmm... what you mean? all songs will be uploaded from your hard disk at one point or another... my suggestion is that you upload them via FTP, and then use the SCAN FOLDER function!
